I Ranked All 117 of Taylor Swift's Songs So You Don't Have To

Quarantine has given me a whole lot of free time, so this morning, the idea struck me to make a really big list. I was listening to Taylor Swift on shuffle, and I realized that she is probably the artist with the largest library of music that I listen to, and I genuinely feel like I know almost every word to all of her songs. I was curious as to how many songs she really has in her personal album discography and it came in at 117 songs. So to challenge myself, I decided to spend my Monday ranking all 117 of those songs in order from her best to her worst. We are officially rebranding to Kate Makes LONG LONG Lists.

I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan. I've been listening to her music since I was in 5th grade, and I've seen her twice in concert (once during the Speak Now tour and once during the Reputation tour). If you're a fellow Taylor Swift fan, you probably have your favorite songs and albums, and I can definitely name my top 10 at the drop of a hat. However, when I looked at just how many songs there really are, I decided to challenge myself to really look at each song and try to give a definitive ranking.

DISCLAIMER: This was really difficult for me, especially once I got down to the range of rankings 50-100. It's very easy to pick out your 30 standouts, and even your 30 bottom picks, but the middle is where it gets confusing. I'm sure if you were to rank these, your 117 item list would look different from mine! I've also chosen to exclude any songs that aren't original versions from her personal albums (i.e. songs written specifically for films like "I Don't Want To Live Forever" from Fifty Shades of Gray, feature songs like "Two Is Better Than One" by Boys Like Girls, and acoustic versions or commentary tracks). I could also probably revisit this list tomorrow and possibly move things around for hours. But this is my best attempt at an accurate ranking, SO with all of that being said, here are all 117 of Taylor Swift's songs ranked from worst to best (with some brief commentary and statistics at the end!).

117 a.k.a Taylor Swift's worst track (I'm sorry): Superman

Okay this is a really honest analysis of this song. It sounds like it belongs on a 2004 teen movie soundtrack. I've often found myself being extra critical of songs that are only available on the deluxe version albums, because these little extras always feel like an afterthought, or songs that just wouldn't make the cut, making them worse. So there, I'm sorry Taylor!!

116. A Perfectly Good Heart

The opening of this song feels kinda whiny to me and I just don't like the key or the phrasing :/

115. A Place In This World

This song made me feel like a loner?? And it came out when I was in 5th grade so I feel like it must've just been bad timing??

114. It's Nice To Have A Friend

For me, this is the worst song off Lover. It just feels very off-putting to me for some reason?? This song came out in August 2019 and every other song feels very summery, but this one genuinely reminds me of a cold winter day, and not in a good way. I also don't like the creepy choir harmony in the background.

113. Girl At Home

Another outlier for me, this is an extra song on the deluxe version of Red. And Red is a great album! This is easily the least memorable track on the album. I'm guessing you have never even heard this, so just don't listen to it.

112. Change

This song was on a Wii karaoke game I had when I was younger and I was always so annoyed that this was the TSwift track that made the cut. Especially in the Fearless era when you could've given me something like You Belong With Me or White Horse (but more on that later!).

111. Tell Me Why

This is the second worst on the Fearless album for me, and mostly just because it blends in. If you were to create a generic song that encompasses all of her music in this era without any memorable album, this would be the output.

110. New Romantics

The worst part of this song is easily the part where she goes "WE SING IT PROUDLY"... it just feels like a Kidz Bop cover at that point.

109. The Lucky One

This song has some redeeming qualities, but besides the lyrics, I just don't really like the repetitive chorus.

108. Innocent

This song is about KANYE WEST. Did you know that??? I bet you did not.

107. Daylight

From Lover, another song that just didn't do it for me. I would say it's one of those "best of the worst" type of songs, but I still wouldn't choose to listen to it.

106. I Think He Knows

Lover, sweetie, I'm so sorry. I feel like I'm throwing major shade at this album so far, but this one also has a weird repetitive chorus. I've skipped it almost every time it's come on.

105. Holy Ground

The bridge is the only part I like in this song. And even that isn't the greatest.

104. Paper Rings

I feel like I'm gonna get hate for this ranking, so I'm sorry, but I don't like Paper Rings. I don't get it. It's too cutesy, it reminds me of Easter but not in a good way ??

103. The Outside

Another early Taylor type of song that feels like it was written for middle school girls who don't fit in -- I'm sure I enjoyed it when I was 12 but I don't like it now.

102. Ours

This song drives me crazy for some reason, I think it has to do with the music video being way too literal and looking like a Staples commercial.

101. King of My Heart

The first song from reputation to be mentioned and by far the worst for me -- I've always found this song to be a strange tempo.

100. Dancing with Our Hands Tied

Okay, hear me out, this song sounds like that one Spongebob episode where Spongebob thinks that Mr. Krabs has become a robot, and Mr. Krabs is in his office dancing on his desk to that beep boop song. I'm gonna link it right here so you can make your own judgment.

99. Starlight

One of the least memorable from Red

98. Cold As You

This is a major emo song from the first album, so it's kind of just a mood but today I was not in that mood so it fell low.

97. How You Get the Girl

I've always found this song to be catchy, but just slightly annoying with the writing

96. Me!

5 words. "HEY", "KIDS", "SPELLING", "IS", "FUN". Do you want to know some tea? The single version of this song had that line in it, but when the album got released, they took it out. Because it got so much hate!!! Go listen to the album version and you'll notice it's missing!

95. This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

This song is genuinely not bad -- we're starting to get into the better stuff lower on the list so no hate

94. The Best Day

Shoutout to moms, this song is for you, and it's so cute

93. Tied Together With A Smile

A good bop from early country Taylor

92. The Other Side of the Door

The first really redeeming deluxe version EP-type of track, I really like the writing in this one

91. Come In With The Rain

Ditto from 92.

90. Wonderland

This song is giving you Alice In Wonderland realness. It sounds like it was created for the Tim Burton remake that came out around this time, but I guess that was just a missed business opportunity.

89. I'm Only Me When I'm With You

A major best friend bop, send this one to your best friend on their birthday

88. You're Not Sorry

When I was younger I thought this song was about smoking ?? There's a line where she says "And you've got your share of secrets and I'm tired of being the last to know" and I genuinely thought she was saying "And you've got your pack of cigarettes and I'm tired of being the last to know" so I thought she was calling him out for lying about being a smoker. omg.

87. The Way I Loved You

This one is a lot like Tell Me Why in the sense that it's just kind of a generic song from this era -- but it's definitely less filler

86. Jump Then Fall

This song is cute play it on Valentine's Day

85. Bad Blood

Okay tea, this song is pretty good, but it was overplayed on the radio and if you're a true TSwift fan you know that it came out like a year before it got popular so it was just kind of annoying ://

Also remember when she had like a whole girl gang of celebrities in the music video?? Does she still talk to any of those people?? Someone check on them

84. New Years Day

This song is cute -- I also think I just experienced a Mandella effect cuz I was POSITIVE it came out on the deluxe version of Lover?? But it's really from Reputation. That seems wrong to me so comment below if you think we're being bamboozled and there was a glitch in the matrix.

83. Afterglow

I really didn't like this song when Lover first came out, but it's grown on me

82. Stay Beautiful

I love the country twang that Taylor has in this track

81. Should've Said No

IF YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIFTH GRADE SELF

SCREAMING TO THIS TRACK ABOUT YOUR IMAGINARY BOYFRIEND

WHO CHEATED ON YOU

then you're a real one

80. I Knew You Were Trouble

This honestly should probaby be ranked lower because of the stupid goat remix being stuck in my head permanently, but before that, it was a good track

79. Stay Stay Stay

This is a cute lil bop

78. Never Grow Up

This song will make you very emo the older you are or if you're going through a big life transition, you've been warned

77. Haunted

This song is kind of epic, and it ranks this high solely because it's damn near cinematic

76. Mean

This song is one of the first moments where I think Taylor stood up to her haters, and she did so in full country mode

75. 22

I'm 21 so I bet if you ask me a year from now, this song will be ranked higher after yelling it for 24 hours straight on my birthday

74. Welcome to New York

This song is iconic and has its place, and as a stand alone track, it's very catchy

73. I Know Places

This album does not get a lot of credit, because it only has like 3 iconic tracks, but this is a really good one to me

72. I Forgot That You Existed

As a purist, I listened to Lover in order as soon as it came out, and this is the first track. And I'm not the biggest fan of it, but it's a great start to the album because it's very light and airy. It's the Skinny Pop of the album.

71. Wildest Dreams

If you didn't put red lipstick on and lipsync to this song, then you're a fake fan

70. Shake it Off

The radio ruined this one for me, but when it first came out, it was a bop

69. Picture to Burn

Another song that we all screamed in 5th grade about our imaginary boyfriends cheating on us, the best line being "CUZ NOTHIN'S STOPPIN ME FROM GOIN OUT WITH ALL OF YOUR BEST FRIENDS"

68. Cornelia Street

This is one of my favorites off Lover, mostly because I like how real the lyrics feel

67. End Game

I think this would be ranked higher if it was just Taylor on the track. I also really don't like Ed Sheeran so feel free to fight me in the comments cuz I know that's a really unpopular opinion!

66. All You Had To Do Was Stay

Lyrics are on point

65. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together

Iconic, sensational, amazing, never been done before, calling John Mayer OUT

64. So It Goes...

So this song, fun fact, was the only one that Taylor didn't perform off the Reputation album during that tour. She had this one play after she got off stage and they rolled the credits for the dancers/backup/crew members, and it was just really amazing

63. The Moment I Knew

THIS. my friends. is probaby the best of the EP deluxe version-type songs. This one is from Red, and it has a very good story to it. In a way, it reminds me of Taylor's old style of writing, while incorporating a really dramatic chorus.

62. Death by A Thousand Cuts

This song is really catchy

61. Invisible

This song is for all of you whose sixth grade crushes were into someone else. Like this post if you stared out the window in the backseat of your mom's car, looking out the window and listening to this song like you were in a music video.

60. Better Than Revenge

Okay I had to do some research on this song because I really never knew who it was about, and here's the tea, it's about Joe Jonas. The girl she's referencing in the song is someone he ended up hooking up with right after he broke up with Taylor, and I remember being really shocked in this song when she makes a lowkey really racy reference: "She's better known for the things that she does on the mattress" 12 year old me was SHOOK!

59. Hey Stephen

Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm, that's how 50% of the song goes

58. Dress

This song came out and I 100% guessed it was made for a Fifty Shades movie cuz it sounds like that's where it belongs, but it's still really catchy

57. State of Grace

Now we're getting into the REALLY good stuff

56. Teardrops On My Guitar

Arguably the song that started everything, with my favorite line in the whole song being, "So I drive I home along, as I turn out the light, I'll put his picture down and maYBE GET SOME SLEEP TONIGHT" 5th grade Kate was hit by this one

55. Everything Has Changed

Although Ed Sheeran is on this one, this was before he was really a thing so I didn't mind him being a part of it

54. Don't Blame Me

Okay I'm gonna address something -- Reputation gets a lot of hate. I know people think that this phase for her was really out of character and doesn't really "fit" her discography, but I think it was VERY refreshing. And this song is a bop.

53. The Story of Us

The music video that takes place in a library? Iconic

52. Love Story

I'm guessing people will be mad this didn't rank higher, because of its place in music history, but I'm SORRY there are too many good ones in this range to count

51. Soon You'll Get Better

This. song. will. break. you. It is probably the saddest one she's every written (besides Ronan, which is not listed here because it was technically a single that was never put on an album)

50. Come Back, Be Here

ANOTHER sensational deluxe version track. This one is especially good.

49. Speak Now

This one is a really cute story, obviously the album title track, and very catchy

48. Fearless

Another album title track, earns its spot

47. Call It What You Want

I found a new appreciation for this song after watching Taylor's new documentary, Miss Americana. She sings it acoustically to her boyfriend and it's cute as heck.

46. Long Live

Okay this song would be perfect to listen to at your high school graduation. That is all.

45. London Boy

This one is what I would categorize as one of Taylor's "glamour songs", it has a very upbeat, sophisticated feel. There's another one coming up on this list very soon.

44. Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince

This song reminds me of Riverdale, but in a good way

43. Sparks Fly

This song was a top 3 pick on the Speak Now album

42. Clean

Okay when I first heard and saw this song I had a moment where I was worried that Taylor had struggled with drugs. But then I realized it was about a person and just had really good analogies.

41. Red

The title track off what I BELIEVED was my favorite album, but more on that later. This song is everything, and Taylor single-handedly made red lipstick and high wasted shorts fashion with this one.

40. Forever & Always

THIS song, fun fact, was a late edition to Fearless because it was finalized right around the time she and Joe broke up. But she really wanted this one on the album to call him out. Then she went on Ellen and exposed him for breaking up with her in a 15-second phone call. Tea.

39. This Love

I kinda like this song because it almost seems like the type of song that would be about falling back in love with someone, which is a really sweet thought :') aw

38. Mary's Song (Oh My My My)

This is probably a top 3 pick off the first album, I just love the story in this song

37. If This Was A Movie

ANOTHER great pick. I used to think the chorus was "Come back, come back, come back to me Eli" and I was like WHO. IS ELI. but the lyric is really "come back, come back, come back to me-e like".

36. I Did Something Bad

As close as Taylor will ever get to dubstep.

35. Tim McGraw

This song started it all -- her first track off her first album. It has earned its place.

34. You Need To Calm Down

ThiS sOnG is so catchy. I would also categorize it as a "glamour song" for its beat and the way she sings it

33. I Wish You Would

Wow you're still reading this? Thank you <3

32. Fifteen

This song invented high school. Also, side note: when she performs this song, she literally says "Back then I swore I was gonna marry him someday, but I realized some bigger dreams of mine" and when she says that last part she looks at the crowd acknowledging that this, performing, is her dream and the crowd goes NUTS you will get goosebumps

31. Ready For It?

This song introduced a new era for Taylor (technically not the first single or anything off the album, but it's the first track AND what she starts her concert with on this tour)

30. Out of the Woods

I think this one is about Harry Styles?? Someone fact check me

29. Sad Beautiful Tragic

This song is a low, emo point. If you want something to cry to I would highly recommend. It's also gorgeous.

28. False God

This is a great song to listen to when you're chillin out

27. Our Song

If you wanna know how much I love this song, it is the number one song that I would do for a karaoke contest. Legit.

26. Breathe

I think this song is kind of underrated, because it's a great story about heartbreak and feeling like you need someone even though you know you can't have them. It's very sad but very good.

25. The Last Time

ANOTHER hit from the Red era. For me, this one is really good. Also, what ever happened to the guy on this track? Gary Lightfoot? Someone go check on him.

24. Style

You've got that james.dean.day.dream.lookinyoureyes

23. Lover

A true, Valentines Day, wedding, all around cute cute song

22. Delicate

I like this song a whole lot

21. The Man

Ladies, this one is for US. Taylor's commentary on this track goes OFF.

20. You're In Love

This is a sweet song to listen to at night while you're driving

19. White Horse

This one is for everyone who had their heart SHATTERED in fifth grade when your crush came around a little too late. Or at least that's how I interpreted it at that age.

18. Back to December

If you were lucky enough to be at the Highland Middle School talent show, you would've heard me sing this song in seventh grade. Fair warning, from my experience, the breath control is really hard when you're singing the chorus.

17. Gorgeous

The glamour song to end all glamour songs

16. I Almost Do

I picture this song being listened to in a penthouse apartment looking out at the city while you think about somebody and wonder if they think about you too. Cuz that's kind of what she says in the song.

15. Begin Again

This song should be listened to while you study at Starbucks.

14. Mine

This song revolutionalized her writing in my opinion -- I think she tapped into more of a character than writing from her own experiences

13. Untouchable

This is another nighttime driving song

12. You Belong With Me

If you were ucky enough to be at the Highland Middle School talent show, you would've heard me sing this song in SIXTH grade. It was cute as heck. I think this was the song that really put her on the map in the pop music space.

11. Look What You Made Me Do.

This ranking will probably generate some hate mail.

I think this song was one of the best. songs. Taylor. has. ever. written.

She called everyone OUT

She said NO MORE

She was NOT going to put up with it anymore or be silenced

Then the music video dropped, which was a whole other LEVEL of symbolism. It was iconic.

Not to mention "I'M SORRY, THE OLD TAYLOR CAN'T COME TO THE PHONE RIGHT NOW.

WHY? OH!

...CUZ SHE'S DEAD" unreal

10. Blank Space

I think this song was one of the first times Taylor really took a look at how the media wrote about her and made her seem, and she said "here you go" and wrote an entire song about how they portray her to be a psycho who replaces guys like it's a blank space. boom.

9. Enchanted

This song was my favorite off of Speak Now for a long time, and I think it's a very romantic chorus. Also the title of her perfume, which I bought at Kohls.

8. Superstar

This, my friends, is the best deluxe version song out there. From Fearless, this EASILY should've made the album. It's perfection.

7. Last Kiss

This song is really sad, but it's a perfect portrayal of heartbreak.

6. Cruel Summer

This was the summer bop that I needed from Lover.

5. Treacherous

I think this song encapsulates the Red era perfectly.

4. The Archer

My favorite line has to be her lil humpty dumpty reference

3. Dear John

o.m.g. probably the song I've sang the most on karaoke in my living room, this song is unreal

2. Getaway Car

My most special memory from a Taylor Swift concert is Taylor singing this song at Soldier Field as it started to rain. It was incredible.

And here it is.

The moment you've all been waiting for.

My #1 favorite Taylor Swift song is...

*drum roll*

1. All Too Well

The most iconic, memorable, heartfelt, heartbreaking, and amazing song. That she has ever made. This song has been my favorite of all of her tracks since it came out, and to this day, is my most listened to song of all of her music. The lyrics are absolutely incredible, and I think through many phases of life, it has meant different things to me, but it's so special. That's why it is my number one!

Fun with Statistics

Okay, so I decided to do some math along with my ranking. I walked into this expecting the Red album to dominate, and Lover to fall by the wayside. However, I was very surprised to learn that, statistically speaking, my highest ranked album was actually Reputation! This is the full list:

  1. Reputation: 52.6

  2. Speak Now: 52.76

  3. Red: 56.94

  4. 1989: 58.38

  5. Lover: 59.33

  6. Fearless: 59.44

  7. Taylor Swift: 75.93

I feel really guilty that Taylor's first album came in DEAD last (by a lot), but I think that's just because her music has changed and been elevated so much since 2006. The highest rank from that album was only 26 with "Our Song", and the top 25 were pretty evenly split between the other albums.

I think what really killed Red's score were some of the more popularized songs and the EP-type tracks that don't make the cut for me. That's also the longest album, and while it's only the longest by 1 track, there were 3 songs that ranked in the bottom 10%. I curse the EP tracks that shouldn't be put on the deluxe version in the first place, they really don't add to the experience for me.

BONUS: SPOTIFY PLAYLIST

I decided to take the time to make this ranked list in a spotify playlist, so you can listen from best to worst (or worst to best if you're feeling it). That's linked right here, so be sure to give it a listen!

P.S. Taylor Swift if you're reading this, I love you

xo Kate
